Battle of the Drugstore Primers

Happy Sunday everyone!

Sorry for being MIA, but I’m back with more ideas than ever. So for those of you who have been keeping up with my blog, you may have seen one of my previous posts – Beauty on a Budget: Mini-Drugstore Haul! In this mini haul, I bought three drugstore primers and since then, I have been alternating them and trying them out.

I often have a hard time finding a primer because I have oily skin.

The primers that I purchased were the following:

1- Revlon: Photoready Prime & Anti Shine Balm in 010 Clear Transparentdsc_0054

I was a little skeptical about trying this primer out… I wasn’t sure what to expect given that it is a balm and the way it’s applied. The balm looks white, but once it is applied on your skin it becomes transparent/clear. The main reason I purchased the primer was because it says that it is “Prime + Anti-Shine” and I have oily skin. This primer definitely helps my makeup stay on all day during work, and my face isn’t as shiny as quickly. Also, it will give you an even complexion, both in color and in texture… it leaves your skin super soft and helps your foundation apply nicely!

Would I buy this again? Definitely! It’s worth the money. You can purchase yours here! ULTA now has buy one, get one half off for Revlon products.

2- Revlon: Photoready Perfecting Primer in 001dsc_0048

I bought this primer because I had heard really good things about it and also, I had a manufacturer’s coupon and it required that you bought two items. This primer is light pink in color, but also becomes clear when applied to your face. This primer doesn’t specify whether or not it is good for oily/combination skin, but it works very well with my skin. This one also evens out your skin, helps your make-up stay on longer and helped with the shine on my face. Another reason I really liked this primer was because it is lighter on your skin than the PhotoReady Prime + Anti Shine Balm.

Would I purchase this again? Of course! I would probably purchase this one before purchasing the balm. You can get yours from any drugstore, or from ULTA – make sure you look for good deals. You can purchase yours here!

3- Maybelline: Master Prime – Blur + Illuminate in 200dsc_0059

When buying this primer, I had a coupon (as always) and that was probably the primary reason I bought it. My second thought was…. wow, how great a primer that can also illuminate and give you a nice glow. Boy, was I wrong. This primer does not work for me at all, considering my oily skin. I feel as if my face was reflecting light… not good at all. Maybe if you have dry skin it may work for you, but for me… I don’t have much to say about it or at least nothing good.

Would I purchase this item again? Nope! If you would like to give this primer a try, you can purchase it here!

If I had to sort them from my most favorite to my least favorite, it would go as follows:

  1. Revlon: Photoready Perfecting Primer in 001
  2. Revlon: Photoready Prime & Anti Shine Balm in 010 Clear Transparent
  3. Maybelline: Master Prime – Blur + Illuminate in 200

The best thing about all of these primers is that they are all under $15, so they are a great buy! You can pick up yours from any drugstore, Amazon, and even Ulta.

Have you tried out any of these primers? Do you know of any better ones? Don’t forget to leave your comments, feedback and suggestions below!

Lots of love,

Flo Barcelo

  1. Great review! I haven’t tried any primers yet, but my dry patches are starting to show. The maybelline one sounds great!

Thank you so much! I totally recommend the Ponds Dry Skin Cream. You can also find it at any drugstore. It’ll work wonders on any dry patches. I had a small dry patch near my mouth and within a week of using it it definitely made a difference! Let me know if you do try it and if you like it!

I’m gonna have to try the revlon primer now especially the balm I like solid primers. I also did not like the mabaline primer it was like putting a bad lotion in my face.
